Thomas was born into a noble family in the year 1225 in Italy and at a very young age of 5, was expected to join the monastery as a Benedictine monk and eventually become the abbot of Monte Cassino. Against his parents' wishes, Thomas was determined to join the Dominican Order instead. In an attempt to dissuade him, his parents locked him up for almost a year. During his imprisonment, they sent in a harlot to tempt him, but he drove her out with a burning stick. Angels came to him and Thomas was given a special grace of not being tempted against purity in his life again. He went on to enter the Dominican Order, become a professor and theologian.

Thomas had a brilliant mind. He was gifted with an unparalleled intellect and had a particular ability to make difficult things seem easy. His thinking and teachings were so influential that he was named Doctor of the Church in 1567. Thomas completed his most famous work, Summa theologiae in 1274 (the greatest work on faith and reason ever made) among many other notable works. He is considered as one of the Catholic Church's greatest theologians and philosophers.

Creator of all things, true source of light and wisdom, origin of all being,

graciously let a ray of your light penetrate the darkness of my understanding.

Take from me the double darkness in which I have been born, an obscurity

of sin and ignorance.

Give me a keen understanding, a retentive memory, and the ability to grasp

things correctly and fundamentally. Grant me the talent of being exact in my

explanations and the ability to express myself with thoroughness and charm.

Point out the beginning, direct the progress, and help in the completion.

I ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.
